When Taryn Smith was asked 3 years ago about rowing across 3000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean in the World's Toughest Row, she said "Where do I sign up"?

December 14, 2025 her challenge to become the first American woman to SOLO the Atlantic in this race begins. The past 2 years have been filled with training with her coach Gus Barton in the U.S. and England, learning every conceivable preparation for her treacherous journey. Her 24 ft boat named Allons-Y (Let's Go in French) will be her home for the next 2-3 months. It is a self-righting, fiberglass boat, completely and exclusively powered by rowing. No sails. No motors.

Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Taryn has worked for the Redfish Lake Lodge in Stanley, Idaho as the manager and buyer for the store at the resort. After becoming acquainted with Emulate's products and meeting Julie Stauts, owner, she and Julie began to discuss what types of products would be best suited for the long anticipated exposure to sun, wind, salt and water.

Emulate created custom SPF 100 mineral sunscreen with organic ingredients to protect her skin from the sun, but also nourish it with healing oils. In anticipation of the muscle fatigue and pain she will be using Arthritis & Muscle Rub with CBD and Renew with CBD. She will also be using several other products including Facial Toner to keep skin clean when there is lack of water.

Taryn anticipates facing waves up to 40 ft high, bioluminescent seas, whales, sleep deprivation, isolation and of course every star imaginable. Her final destination will be Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua sometime between mid-February and early March 2026.

When asked what inspires her, Smith said, “You can do anything you want. It takes a lot of work and it can be scary, but it’s good to pursue big goals.”
